Explanation
Al-Hayy is the Ever-Living, the One whose life is perfect, eternal, and without beginning or end. Every other life is borrowed, fragile, and destined for death. Allah's life requires no sustenance, no sleep, and no maintenance. "And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die" (25:58). Because He is perfectly alive, all His other attributes (Hearing, Seeing, Power) are also perfect.
Virtues & Benefits
The combination of "Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum" is considered by many scholars to be the Greatest Name of Allah (Ism al-A'zam). The Prophet ﷺ would call upon these names when he was severely distressed: "Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum, bi-rahmatika astaghith" (O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, by Your mercy I seek help).

- Rely only on the Ever-Living; anyone else you rely on will eventually die or fail you.

- Connect your temporary life to the Ever-Living to give your actions eternal value.
- Do not grieve excessively over those who die; they have returned to the Ever-Living.
