What is the Qibla (Kiblah)?
The Qibla (Arabic: قِبْلَة) is the direction that Muslims face when performing their daily prayers (Salah). It points directly towards the Kaaba, a sacred building located in the center of the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
Facing the Qibla is a fundamental requirement for the validity of prayers. It symbolizes unity among Muslims worldwide, as millions of believers bow towards the exact same focal point regardless of their geographic location.
Why Muslims Face the Kaaba
- Obedience to Allah: Facing the Kaaba is a direct command from Allah in the Quran.
- Unity of the Ummah: It creates a unified physical direction for the global Muslim community.
- Salah & Janazah: It is obligatory for the five daily prayers, and Muslims are buried facing the Qibla.
- Mosque Construction: Every mosque in the world is architecturally oriented towards this point.
Quranic Evidence
"We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram..."
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:144)

History of the Qibla Direction
Islamic Rulings (Fiqh of Qibla for Travelers)
- Unable to Determine Direction: If you are lost, have no tools, or lack internet, you must use your best judgment (Ijtihad). If you later discover you were wrong, your prayer is still valid.
- Travelers & Airplanes: If praying obligatory (Fard) prayers on a plane or train, you must attempt to face the Qibla. If it turns, you turn with it if possible. For voluntary (Nafl) prayers while traveling, one may pray in the direction the vehicle is moving.
- Hospitals: If a patient is unable to turn in their bed due to severe illness, they pray as they are.
Methodology & Calculation
Historically, Muslims used astrolabes, the position of the sun, and the stars to determine the direction of Makkah. Today, we use the Great Circle (Haversine) Formula.
Because the Earth is a sphere, the shortest distance between two points is not a straight flat line, but an arc called a Great Circle. The Qibla bearing is calculated by finding the initial bearing along the shortest route from your GPS coordinates to the Kaaba's WGS84 coordinates.
Where φ is Latitude, λ is Longitude.
Compass Information & Troubleshooting Guide
Calibration: Digital compasses rely on your device's magnetometer. If the compass needle is erratic or spinning, calibrate it by waving your phone in a horizontal figure-8 motion.
Magnetic Interference: Metal cases, laptops, and concrete rebar indoors will severely disrupt the sensor. For perfect accuracy, step outdoors.
Browser Compatibility: The Live Compass requires a mobile device with a gyroscope and magnetometer, running Chrome, Safari, or Firefox with granted sensor permissions. Desktop browsers will not display the live compass accurately; please use the Map View.
