📖 About Shawwal (شوال)

Shawwal is the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. The name comes from the Arabic word "shala" meaning "to raise" or "carry." The first day of Shawwal is Eid ul-Fitr, one of the two major Islamic festivals, celebrating the completion of Ramadan fasting. Eid ul-Fitr is a day of joy, gratitude, and community. Muslims perform special Eid prayers in congregation, give Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana), wear new clothes, and visit family and friends. The celebration typically lasts three days. After Eid, fasting six days of Shawwal is highly recommended (Sunnah). Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that fasting Ramadan followed by six days of Shawwal is equivalent to fasting the entire year. The six fasts can be observed consecutively or spread throughout the month. Shawwal is also when the Battle of Uhud took place in 3 AH.
