Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar and one of the four sacred months in Islam. The word "Muharram" means "forbidden" or "sacred" in Arabic. Fighting and warfare are prohibited during this month according to Islamic tradition. The most significant event in Muharram is Ashura, observed on the 10th day. Ashura commemorates multiple historical events: the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Israelites from Pharaoh by parting the Red Sea, and most notably, the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE (61 AH). Muslims observe Ashura through fasting, prayer, and reflection. Sunni Muslims fast on the 9th and 10th (or 10th and 11th) of Muharram following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
