📖 About Ramadan (رمضان)

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the holiest month for Muslims worldwide. The name comes from the Arabic root "ramida" meaning "scorching heat." During Ramadan, all adult Muslims who are physically able must fast (sawm) from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib), abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and intimate relations. Fasting in Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam. The Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) during Ramadan: "The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance for mankind" (Quran 2:185). Muslims perform extra night prayers called Taraweeh, reading the entire Quran over the course of the month. The last 10 nights of Ramadan contain Laylatul Qadr (Night of Power), which is better than a thousand months. Many Muslims observe I'tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque) during the last 10 days. Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) is given before Eid prayers. Ramadan ends with the celebration of Eid ul-Fitr on 1st Shawwal.
