Overview
Iman (Faith) is the foundation of Islamic belief, encompassing belief in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Day of Judgment, and divine decree. The Prophet ﷺ defined Iman through the famous Hadith of Jibreel as believing in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and predestination. Authentic hadiths reveal that Iman has over sixty branches, with the highest being the testimony of faith and the lowest being removing harm from the road.
Key Lessons
Faith is not static — it increases with obedience and decreases with sin. A believer must continually renew and strengthen their Iman through dhikr, knowledge, and righteous deeds. The concept of Iman also encompasses action of the heart, tongue, and limbs.
Practical Guidance
Strengthen your faith by learning the six pillars of Iman deeply, attending Islamic circles, reading Quran daily, and making dua for firm faith (thabaat). Recite "Allahumma thabbit qalbi ala dinik" regularly. Avoid sins that weaken faith and seek repentance immediately.

Narrated Abu Huraira:When the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah," (Allah heard those who sent praises to Him), he would say, "Rabbana wa laka l-hamd." On bowing and raising his head from it the Prophet (ﷺ) used to say Takbir. He also used to say Takbir on rising after the two prostrations. (See Hadith No)
ہم سے آدم بن ابی ایاس نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم سے ابن ابی ذئب نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے سعید مقبری سے بیان کیا، انہوں نے ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم جب «سمع الله لمن حمده» کہتے تو اس کے بعد «اللهم ربنا ولك الحمد» بھی کہتے۔ اسی طرح جب آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم رکوع کرتے اور سر اٹھاتے تو تکبیر کہتے۔ دونوں سجدوں سے کھڑے ہوتے وقت بھی آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم «الله أكبر» کہا کرتے تھے۔
Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "When the Imam says, "Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah," you should say, "Allahumma Rabbana laka l-hamd." And if the saying of any one of you coincides with that of the angels, all his past sins will be forgiven
ہم سے عبداللہ بن یوسف تنیسی نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہمیں امام مالک نے سمی سے خبر دی، انہوں نے ابوصالح ذکوان کے واسطے سے بیان کیا، انہوں نے ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ جب امام «سمع الله لمن حمده» کہے تو تم «اللهم ربنا ولك الحمد» کہو۔ کیونکہ جس کا یہ کہنا فرشتوں کے کہنے کے ساتھ ہو گا، اس کے پچھلے تمام گناہ بخش دیے جائیں گے
Narrated Abu Salama:Abu Hurairah said, "No doubt, my Salat is similar to that of the Prophet (ﷺ)." Abu Hurairah used to recite Qunut after saying Sami' Allahu liman hamida in the last Rak'a of the Zuhr, Isha and Fajr Prayers. He would ask Allah's Forgiveness for the true believers and curse the disbelievers
ہم سے معاذ بن فضالہ نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے ہشام دستوائی سے، انہوں نے یحییٰ بن ابی کثیر سے، انہوں نے ابوسلمہ سے، انہوں نے ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے، انہوں نے کہا کہ لو میں تمہیں نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی نماز کے قریب قریب کر دوں گا۔ چنانچہ ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ، ظہر، عشاء اور صبح کی آخری رکعات میں قنوت پڑھا کرتے تھے۔ «سمع الله لمن حمده» کے بعد۔ یعنی مومنین کے حق میں دعا کرتے اور کفار پر لعنت بھیجتے۔
Narrated Rifa`a bin Rafi` Az-Zuraqi:One day we were praying behind the Prophet. When he raised his head from bowing, he said, "Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah." A man behind him said, "Rabbana wa laka l-hamdu, hamdan kathiran taiyiban mubarakan fihi" (O our Lord! All the praises are for You, many good and blessed praises). When the Prophet completed the prayer, he asked, "Who has said these words?" The man replied, "I." The Prophet said, "I saw over thirty angels competing to write it first." Prophet rose (from bowing) and stood straight till all the vertebrae of his spinal column came to a natural position
ہم سے عبداللہ بن مسلمہ قعنبی نے بیان کیا امام مالک رضی اللہ عنہ سے، انہوں نے نعیم بن عبداللہ مجمر سے، انہوں نے علی بن یحییٰ بن خلاد زرقی سے، انہوں نے اپنے باپ سے، انہوں نے رفاعہ بن رافع زرقی سے، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی اقتداء میں نماز پڑھ رہے تھے۔ جب آپ رکوع سے سر اٹھاتے تو «سمع الله لمن حمده» کہتے۔ ایک شخص نے پیچھے سے کہا «ربنا ولك الحمد، حمدا كثيرا طيبا مباركا فيه» آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے نماز سے فارغ ہو کر دریافت فرمایا کہ کس نے یہ کلمات کہے ہیں، اس شخص نے جواب دیا کہ میں نے۔ اس پر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ میں نے تیس سے زیادہ فرشتوں کو دیکھا کہ ان کلمات کو لکھنے میں وہ ایک دوسرے پر سبقت لے جانا چاہتے تھے۔
Narrated Thabit:Anas used to demonstrate to us the prayer of the Prophet (ﷺ) and while demonstrating, he used to raise his head from bowing and stand so long that we would say that he had forgotten (the prostration)
ہم سے ابوالولید نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے شعبہ نے ثابت بنانی سے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ انس رضی اللہ عنہ ہمیں نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی نماز کا طریقہ بتلاتے تھے۔ چنانچہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نماز پڑھتے اور جب اپنا سر رکوع سے اٹھاتے تو اتنی دیر تک کھڑے رہتے کہ ہم سوچنے لگتے کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم بھول گئے ہیں۔
Narrated Al-Bara':The bowing, the prostrations, the period of standing after bowing and the interval between the two prostrations of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to be equal in duration
ہم سے ابوالولید ہشام بن عبدالملک نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے شعبہ نے حکم سے بیان کیا، انہوں نے ابن ابی لیلیٰ سے، انہوں نے براء بن عازب رضی اللہ عنہ سے، انہوں نے کہا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے رکوع، سجدہ، رکوع سے سر اٹھاتے وقت اور دونوں سجدوں کے درمیان کا بیٹھنا تقریباً برابر ہوتا تھا۔
Narrated Aiyub:Abu Qilaba said, "Malik bin Huwairith used to demonstrate to us the prayer of the Prophet (ﷺ) at times other than that of the compulsory prayers. So (once) he stood up for prayer and performed a perfect Qiyam (standing and reciting from the Holy Qur'an) and then bowed and performed bowing perfectly; then he raised his head and stood straight for a while." Abu Qilaba added, "Malik bin Huwairith in that demonstration prayed like this Sheikh of ours, Abu Yazid." Abu Yazid used to sit (for a while) on raising his head from the second prostration before getting up
ہم سے سلیمان بن حرب نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم سے حماد بن زید نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے ایوب سختیانی سے، انہوں نے ابوقلابہ سے کہ مالک بن حویرث رضی اللہ عنہ ہمیں ( نماز پڑھ کر ) دکھلاتے کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کس طرح نماز پڑھتے تھے اور یہ نماز کا وقت نہیں تھا۔ چنانچہ آپ ( ایک مرتبہ ) کھڑے ہوئے اور پوری طرح کھڑے رہے۔ پھر جب رکوع کیا اور پوری طمانیت کے ساتھ سر اٹھایا تب بھی تھوڑی دیر سیدھے کھڑے رہے۔ ابوقلابہ نے بیان کیا کہ مالک رضی اللہ عنہ نے ہمارے اس شیخ ابویزید کی طرح نماز پڑھائی۔ ابویزید جب دوسرے سجدہ سے سر اٹھاتے تو پہلے اچھی طرح بیٹھ لیتے پھر کھڑے ہوتے۔
Narrated Abu Bakr bin `Abdur Rahman Ibn Harith bin Hisham and Abu Salama bin `Abdur Rahman:Abu Huraira used to say Takbir in all the prayers, compulsory and optional -- in the month of Ramadan or other months. He used to say Takbir on standing for prayer and on bowing; then he would say, "Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah," and before prostrating he would say "Rabbana wa laka lhamd." Then he would say Takbir on prostrating and on raising his head from the prostration, then another Takbir on prostrating (for the second time), and on raising his head from the prostration. He also would say the Takbir on standing from the second rak`a. He used to do the same in every rak`a till he completed the prayer. On completion of the prayer, he would say, "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is! No doubt my prayer is closer to that of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) than yours, and this was His prayer till he left this world
ہم سے ابوالیمان نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہمیں شعیب نے خبر دی، انہوں نے زہری سے، انہوں نے کہا کہ مجھ کو ابوبکر بن عبدالرحمٰن بن حارث بن ہشام اور ابوسلمہ بن عبدالرحمٰن نے خبر دی کہ ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ تمام نمازوں میں تکبیر کہا کرتے تھے۔ خواہ فرض ہوں یا نہ ہوں۔ رمضان کا مہینہ ہو یا کوئی اور مہینہ ہو، چنانچہ جب آپ نماز کے لیے کھڑے ہوتے تو تکبیر کہتے، رکوع میں جاتے تو تکبیر کہتے۔ پھر «سمع الله لمن حمده» کہتے اور اس کے بعد «ربنا ولك الحمد» سجدہ سے پہلے، پھر جب سجدہ کے لیے جھکتے تو «الله أكبر» کہتے۔ پھر سجدہ سے سر اٹھاتے تو «الله أكبر» کہتے۔ پھر دوسرا سجدہ کرتے وقت «الله أكبر» کہتے۔ اسی طرح سجدہ سے سر اٹھاتے تو «الله أكبر» کہتے۔ دو رکعات کے بعد قعدہ اولیٰ کرنے کے بعد جب کھڑے ہوتے تب بھی تکبیر کہتے اور آپ ہر رکعت میں ایسا ہی کرتے یہاں تک کہ نماز سے فارغ ہونے تک۔ نماز سے فارغ ہونے کے بعد فرماتے کہ اس ذات کی قسم جس کے ہاتھ میں میری جان ہے میں تم میں سب سے زیادہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی نماز سے مشابہ ہوں۔ اور آپ اسی طرح نماز پڑھتے رہے یہاں تک کہ آپ دنیا سے تشریف لے گئے۔
And Abu Huraira said, "When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) raised his head from (bowing) he used to say "Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa laka l-hamd." He Would invoke Allah for some people by naming them:"O Allah! Save Al-Walid bin Al-Walid and Salama bin Hisham and `Aiyash bin Abi Rabi`a and the weak and the helpless people among the faithful believers O Allah! Be hard on the tribe of Mudar and let them suffer from famine years like that of the time of Joseph." In those days the Eastern section of the tribe of Mudar was against the Prophet
ابوبکر اور ابوسلمہ دونوں نے کہا کہ ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے بتلایا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم جب سر مبارک ( رکوع سے ) اٹھاتے تو «سمع الله لمن حمده، ربنا ولك الحمد» کہہ کر چند لوگوں کے لیے دعائیں کرتے اور نام لے لے کر فرماتے۔ یا اللہ! ولید بن ولید، سلمہ بن ہشام، عیاش بن ابی ربیعہ اور تمام کمزور مسلمانوں کو ( کفار سے ) نجات دے۔ اے اللہ! قبیلہ مضر کے لوگوں کو سختی کے ساتھ کچل دے اور ان پر قحط مسلط کر جیسا کہ یوسف علیہ السلام کے زمانہ میں آیا تھا۔ ان دنوں پورب والے قبیلہ مضر کے لوگ مخالفین میں تھے۔
Narrated Anas bin Malik:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) fell from a horse and the right side of his body was injured. We went to inquire about his health meanwhile it was time for the prayer and he led the prayer sitting and we also prayed while sitting. On completion of the prayer he said, "The Imam is to be followed; say Takbir when he says it; bow when he bows; rise when he rises and when he says "Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah," say, "Rabbana wa laka l-hamd", and prostrate if he prostrates." Sufyan narrated the same from Ma`mar. Ibn Juraij said that his (the Prophet's) right leg had been injured
ہم سے علی بن عبداللہ مدینی نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے سفیان بن عیینہ نے باربار زہری سے یہ بیان کیا کہ انہوں نے کہا کہ میں نے انس بن مالک رضی اللہ عنہ کو یہ کہتے ہوئے سنا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم گھوڑے سے زمین پر گر گئے۔ سفیان نے اکثر ( بجائے «عن فرس» کے ) «من فرس» کہا۔ اس گرنے سے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا دایاں پہلو زخمی ہو گیا تو ہم آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں عیادت کی غرض سے حاضر ہوئے۔ اتنے میں نماز کا وقت ہو گیا اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہمیں بیٹھ کر نماز پڑھائی۔ ہم بھی بیٹھ گئے۔ سفیان نے ایک مرتبہ کہا کہ ہم نے بھی بیٹھ کر نماز پڑھی۔ جب آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نماز سے فارغ ہو گئے تو فرمایا کہ امام اس لیے ہے کہ اس کی اقتداء کی جائے۔ اس لیے جب وہ تکبیر کہے تو تم بھی تکبیر کہو۔ جب رکوع کرے تو تم بھی رکوع کرو۔ جب سر اٹھائے تو تم بھی سر اٹھاؤ اور جب وہ «سمع الله لمن حمده» کہے تو تم «ربنا ولك الحمد» اور جب سجدہ کرے تو تم بھی سجدہ کرو۔ ( سفیان نے اپنے شاگرد علی بن مدینی سے پوچھا کہ ) کیا معمر نے بھی اسی طرح حدیث بیان کی تھی۔ ( علی کہتے ہیں کہ ) میں نے کہا جی ہاں۔ اس پر سفیان بولے کہ معمر کو حدیث یاد تھی۔ زہری نے یوں کہا «ولك الحمد» ۔ سفیان نے یہ بھی کہا کہ مجھے یاد ہے کہ زہری نے یوں کہا آپ کا دایاں بازو چھل گیا تھا۔ جب ہم زہری کے پاس سے نکلے ابن جریج نے کہا میں زہری کے پاس موجود تھا تو انہوں نے یوں کہا کہ آپ کی داہنی پنڈلی چھل گئی۔
