Overview
Iman (Faith) is the foundation of Islamic belief, encompassing belief in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Day of Judgment, and divine decree. The Prophet ﷺ defined Iman through the famous Hadith of Jibreel as believing in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and predestination. Authentic hadiths reveal that Iman has over sixty branches, with the highest being the testimony of faith and the lowest being removing harm from the road.
Key Lessons
Faith is not static — it increases with obedience and decreases with sin. A believer must continually renew and strengthen their Iman through dhikr, knowledge, and righteous deeds. The concept of Iman also encompasses action of the heart, tongue, and limbs.
Practical Guidance
Strengthen your faith by learning the six pillars of Iman deeply, attending Islamic circles, reading Quran daily, and making dua for firm faith (thabaat). Recite "Allahumma thabbit qalbi ala dinik" regularly. Avoid sins that weaken faith and seek repentance immediately.

Narrated Abu Salama:I asked Abu Sa`id, and he was a friend of mine, (about the Night of Qadr) and he said, "We practiced I`tikaf (seclusion in the mosque) in the middle third of the month of Ramadan with the Prophet (ﷺ) . In the morning of the 20th of Ramadan, the Prophet (ﷺ) came and addressed us and said, 'I was informed of (the date of the Night of Qadr) but I was caused to forget it; so search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. (In the dream) I saw myself prostrating in mud and water (as a sign). So, whoever was in I`tikaf with me should return to it with me (for another 10-day's period)', and we returned. At that time there was no sign of clouds in the sky but suddenly a cloud came and it rained till rainwater started leaking through the roof of the mosque which was made of date-palm leaf stalks. Then the prayer was established and I saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) prostrating in mud and water and I saw the traces of mud on his forehead
ہم سے معاذ بن فضالہ نے بیان کیا کہا کہ ہم سے ہشام نے بیان کیا، ان سے یحییٰ بن ابی کثیر نے، ان سے ابوسلمہ نے بیان کیا کہ میں نے ابو سعید خدری رضی اللہ عنہ سے پوچھا، وہ میرے دوست تھے، انہوں نے جواب دیا کہ ہم نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ رمضان کے دوسرے عشرہ میں اعتکاف میں بیٹھے۔ پھر بیس تاریخ کی صبح کو نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اعتکاف سے نکلے اور ہمیں خطبہ دیا آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ مجھے لیلۃ القدر دکھائی گئی، لیکن بھلا دلی گئی یا ( آپ نے یہ فرمایا کہ ) میں خود بھول گیا۔ اس لیے تم اسے آخری عشرہ کی طاق راتوں میں تلاش کرو۔ میں نے یہ بھی دیکھا ہے ( خواب میں ) کہ گویا میں کیچڑ میں سجدہ کر رہا ہوں۔ اس لیے جس نے میرے ساتھ اعتکاف کیا ہو وہ پھر لوٹ آئے اور اعتکاف میں بیٹھے۔ خیر ہم نے پھر اعتکاف کیا۔ اس وقت آسمان پر بادلوں کا ایک ٹکڑا بھی نہیں تھا۔ لیکن دیکھتے ہی دیکھتے بادل آیا اور بارش اتنی ہوئی کہ مسجد کی چھت سے پانی ٹپکنے لگا جو کھجور کی شاخوں سے بنی ہوئی تھی۔ پھر نماز کی تکبیر ہوئی تو میں نے دیکھا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کیچڑ میں سجدہ کر رہے تھے۔ یہاں تک کہ کیچڑ کا نشان میں نے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی پیشانی پر دیکھا۔
Narrated `Aisha:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan
ہم سے قتیبہ بن سعید نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے اسماعیل بن جعفر نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے ابوسہیل نے بیان کیا، ان سے ان کے باپ مالک بن عامر نے اور ان سے عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا، شب قدر کو رمضان کے آخری عشرہ کی طاق راتوں میں ڈھونڈو۔
Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to practice I`tikaf (in the mosque) in the middle third of Ramadan and after passing the twenty nights he used to go back to his house on the 21st, and the people who were in I`tikaf with him also used to go back to their houses. Once in Ramadan, in which he practiced I`tikaf, he established the night prayers at the night in which he used to return home, and then he addressed the people and ordered them whatever Allah wished him to order and said, "I used to practice I`tikaf for these ten days (i.e. the middle third but now I intend to stay in I`tikaf for the last ten days (of the month); so whoever was in I`tikaf with me should stay at his place of seclusion. I have verily been shown (the date of) this Night (of Qadr) but I have forgotten it. So search for it in the odd nights of the last ten days (of this month). I also saw myself (in the dream) prostrating in mud and water." On the night of the 21st, the sky was covered with clouds and it rained, and the rainwater started leaking through the roof of the mosque at the praying place of the Prophet (ﷺ) . I saw with my own eyes the Prophet at the completion of the morning prayer leaving with his face covered with mud and water
ہم سے ابراہیم بن حمزہ نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ مجھ سے عبدالعزیز بن ابی حازم اور عبدالعزیز دراوردی نے بیان کیا، ان سے یزید بن ہاد نے، ان سے محمد بن ابراہیم نے، ان سے ابوسلمہ نے اور ان سے ابو سعید خدری رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم رمضان کے اس عشرہ میں اعتکاف کیا کرتے جو مہینے کے بیج میں پڑتا ہے۔ بیس راتوں کے گزر جانے کے بعد جب اکیسویں تاریخ کی رات آتی تو شام کو آپ گھر واپس آ جاتے۔ جو لوگ آپ کے ساتھ اعتکاف میں ہوتے وہ بھی اپنے گھروں میں واپس آ جاتے۔ ایک رمضان میں آپ جب اعتکاف کئے ہوئے تھے تو اس رات میں بھی ( مسجد ہی میں ) مقیم رہے جس میں آپ کی عادت گھر آ جانے کی تھی، پھر آپ نے لوگوں کو خطبہ دیا اور جو کچھ اللہ پاک نے چاہا، آپ نے لوگوں کو اس کا حکم دیا، پھر فرمایا کہ میں اس ( دوسرے ) عشرہ میں اعتکاف کیا کرتا تھا، لیکن اب مجھ پر یہ ظاہراً ہوا کہ اب اس آخری عشرہ میں مجھے اعتکاف کرنا چاہئے۔ اس لیے جس نے میرے ساتھ اعتکاف کیا ہے وہ اپنے معتکف ہی میں ٹھہرا رہے اور مجھے یہ رات ( شب قدر ) دکھائی گئی لیکن پھر بھلوا دی گئی۔ اس لیے تم لوگ اسے آخری عشرہ ( کی طاق راتوں ) میں تلاش کرو۔ میں نے ( خواب میں ) اپنے کو دیکھا کہ اس رات کیچڑ میں سجدہ کر رہا ہوں۔ پھر اس رات آسمان پر ابر ہوا اور بارش برسی، نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے نماز پڑھنے کی جگہ ( چھت سے ) پانی ٹپکنے لگا۔ یہ اکیسویں کی رات کا ذکر ہے۔ میں نے خود اپنی آنکھوں سے دیکھا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم صبح کی نماز کے بعد واپس ہو رہے تھے۔ اور آپ کے چہرہ مبارک پر کیچڑ لگی ہوئی تھی۔
Narrated `Aisha:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Look for (the Night of Qadr)
مجھ سے محمد بن مثنیٰ نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے یحییٰ قطان نے بیان کیا، ان سے ہشام بن عروہ نے کہا کہ مجھے میرے والد نے خبر دی، انہیں عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ( شب قدر کو ) تلاش کرو۔
Narrated `Aisha:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to practice I`tikaf in the last ten nights of Ramadan and used to say, "Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan
مجھ سے محمد بن سلام نے بیان کیا۔ انہوں نے کہا ہمیں عبدہ بن سلیمان نے خبر دی، انہیں ہشام بن عروہ نے، انہیں ان کے والد (عروہ بن زبیر) نے اور انہیں ام المؤمنین عائشہ صدیقہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم رمضان کے آخری عشرہ میں اعتکاف کرتے اور فرماتے کہ رمضان کے آخری عشرہ میں شب قدر کو تلاش کرو۔
Narrated Ibn `Abbas:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan ,' on the night when nine or seven or five nights remain out of the last ten nights of Ramadan (i.e. 21, 23, 25, respectively)
ہم سے موسیٰ بن اسماعیل نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے وہیب بن خالد نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے ایوب سختیانی نے بیان کیا، ان سے عکرمہ نے اور ان سے ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا، شب قدر کو رمضان کے آخری عشرہ میں تلاش کرو، جب نو راتیں باقی رہ جائیں یا پانچ راتیں باقی رہ جائیں۔ ( یعنی اکیسوئیں یا تئیسوئیں یا پچیسوئیں راتوں میں شب قدر کو تلاش کرو ) ۔
Narrated Ibn `Abbas:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The Night of Qadr is in the last ten nights of the month (Ramadan), either on the first nine or in the last (remaining) seven nights (of Ramadan)." Ibn `Abbas added, "Search for it on the twenty-fourth (of Ramadan)
ہم سے عبداللہ بن ابی الاسود نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے عبدالواحد بن زیاد نے بیان کیا، ان سے عاصم بن سلیمان نے بیان کیا، ان سے ابومجلز اور عکرمہ نے، ان سے ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے بیان کیا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا شب قدر رمضان کے ( آخری ) عشرہ میں پڑتی ہے۔ جب نو راتیں گزر جائیں یا سات باقی رہ جائیں۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی مراد شب قدر سے تھی۔ عبدالوہاب نے ایوب اور خالد سے بیان کیا، ان سے عکرمہ نے اور ان سے ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہ شب قدر کو چوبیس تاریخ ( کی رات ) میں تلاش کرو۔
Narrated 'Ubada bin As-Samit:The Prophet (ﷺ) came out to inform us about the Night of Qadr but two Muslims were quarreling with each other. So, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I came out to inform you about the Night of Qadr but such-and-such persons were quarreling, so the news about it had been taken away; yet that might be for your own good, so search for it on the 29th, 27th and 25th (of Ramadan)
ہم سے محمد بن مثنی نے بیان کیا، ان سے خالد بن حارث نے بیان کیا، ان سے حمید طویل نے بیان کیا، ان سے انس رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا اور ان سے عبادہ بن صامت رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہمیں شب قدر کی خبر دینے کے لیے تشریف لا رہے تھے کہ دو مسلمان آپس میں جھگڑا کرنے لگے۔ اس پر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ میں آیا تھا کہ تمہیں شب قدر بتا دوں لیکن فلاں فلاں نے آپس میں جھگڑا کر لیا۔ پس اس کا علم اٹھا لیا گیا اور امید یہی ہے کہ تمہارے حق میں یہی بہتر ہو گا۔ پس اب تم اس کی تلاش ( آخری عشرہ کی ) نو یا سات یا پانچ ( کی راتوں ) میں کیا کرو۔
Narrated Aisha:With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, the Prophet (ﷺ) used to tighten his waist belt (i.e. work hard) and used to pray all the night, and used to keep his family awake for the prayers
ہم سے علی بن عبداللہ مدینی نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے سفیان بن عیینہ نے بیان کیا، ان سے ابویعفور نے بیان کیا، ان سے ابوالضحیٰ نے، ان سے مسروق نے اور ان سے عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے بیان کیا کہ جب ( رمضان کا ) آخری عشرہ آتا تو نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اپنا تہبند مضبوط باندھتے ( یعنی اپنی کمر پوری طرح کس لیتے ) اور ان راتوں میں آپ خود بھی جاگتے اور اپنے گھر والوں کو بھی جگایا کرتے تھے۔
Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to practice I`tikaf in the last ten days of the month of Ramadan
ہم سے اسماعیل بن عبداللہ نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ مجھ سے ابن وہب نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ مجھ سے یونس نے، انہیں نافع نے خبر دی، اور ان سے عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم رمضان کے آخری عشرہ میں اعتکاف کرتے تھے۔
