Islamic Rulings (Fiqh of Qibla for Travelers)
- Unable to Determine Direction: If you are lost, have no tools, or lack internet, you must use your best judgment (Ijtihad). If you later discover you were wrong, your prayer is still valid.
- Travelers & Airplanes: If praying obligatory (Fard) prayers on a plane or train, you must attempt to face the Qibla. If it turns, you turn with it if possible. For voluntary (Nafl) prayers while traveling, one may pray in the direction the vehicle is moving.
- Hospitals: If a patient is unable to turn in their bed due to severe illness, they pray as they are.
Methodology & Calculation
Historically, Muslims used astrolabes, the position of the sun, and the stars to determine the direction of Makkah. Today, we use the Great Circle (Haversine) Formula.
Because the Earth is a sphere, the shortest distance between two points is not a straight flat line, but an arc called a Great Circle. The Qibla bearing is calculated by finding the initial bearing along the shortest route from your GPS coordinates to the Kaaba's WGS84 coordinates.
