Islamabad, Pakistan's capital since 1967, is a modern city built with Islamic principles in mind. The Faisal Mosque, designed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay, is an iconic symbol of Pakistan and one of the largest mosques in the world with a capacity of 300,000 worshippers. The mosque's tent-like design, inspired by a Bedouin tent in the desert, was funded by King Faisal of Saudi Arabia. Islamabad is home to the International Islamic University (IIU), one of the premier Islamic educational institutions in the Muslim world. The city hosts the headquarters of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, which officially determines Islamic dates for all of Pakistan. The Margalla Hills surrounding Islamabad contain several historic Islamic sites and trails.
