Overview
Iman (Faith) is the foundation of Islamic belief, encompassing belief in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Day of Judgment, and divine decree. The Prophet ﷺ defined Iman through the famous Hadith of Jibreel as believing in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and predestination. Authentic hadiths reveal that Iman has over sixty branches, with the highest being the testimony of faith and the lowest being removing harm from the road.
Key Lessons
Faith is not static — it increases with obedience and decreases with sin. A believer must continually renew and strengthen their Iman through dhikr, knowledge, and righteous deeds. The concept of Iman also encompasses action of the heart, tongue, and limbs.
Practical Guidance
Strengthen your faith by learning the six pillars of Iman deeply, attending Islamic circles, reading Quran daily, and making dua for firm faith (thabaat). Recite "Allahumma thabbit qalbi ala dinik" regularly. Avoid sins that weaken faith and seek repentance immediately.

Narrated Abu Wail from `Abdullah:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever takes a false oath in order to grab another man's (or his brother's) property, then Allah will be angry with him when he will meet him." Then Allah confirmed this by revealing the Divine Verse: "Verily! Those who purchase a little gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and their oaths . . . Will get painful punishment." Narrated Talha bin 'Ubaidullah:A man came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asking him about Islam, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "You have to offer five compulsory prayers in a day and a night (24 hours)." The man asked, "Is there any more compulsory prayers for me?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "No, unless you like to offer Nawafil (i.e. optional prayers)." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) then added, "You have to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan." The man said, "Am I to fast any other days?' Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "No, unless you wish to observe the optional fast voluntarily." Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) told him about the compulsory Zakat. The man asked, "Do I have to give anything besides?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "No, unless you wish to give in charity voluntarily." So, the man departed saying, "By Allah I will neither do more nor less than that." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If he has said the truth he will be successful
ہم سے اسماعیل بن عبداللہ نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ مجھ سے امام مالک نے بیان کیا، ان سے ان کے چچا ابوسہیل نے، ان سے ان کے والد نے اور انہوں نے طلحہ بن عبیداللہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے سنا، آپ نے بیان کیا کہ ایک صاحب ( ضمام بن ثعلبہ ) نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں آئے اور اسلام کے متعلق پوچھنے لگے۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ”دن اور رات میں پانچ نمازیں ادا کرنا۔“ اس نے پوچھا کیا اس کے علاوہ بھی مجھ پر کچھ نماز اور ضروری ہیں؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ”نہیں یہ دوسری بات ہے کہ تم نفل پڑھو۔“ پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ”اور رمضان کے روزے ہیں۔“ اس نے پوچھا کیا اس کے علاوہ بھی مجھ پر کچھ ( روزے ) واجب ہیں؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا نہیں ”سوا اس کے جو تم اپنے طور پر نفل رکھو۔“ طلحہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا کہ ان کے سامنے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے زکوٰۃ کا بھی ذکر کیا تو انہوں نے پوچھا، کیا ( جو فرض زکوٰۃ آپ نے بتائی ہے ) اس کے علاوہ بھی مجھ پر کوئی خیرات واجب ہے؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ”نہیں، سوا اس کے جو تم خود اپنی طرف سے نفل دو۔“ اس کے بعد وہ صاحب یہ کہتے ہوئے جانے لگے کہ اللہ گواہ ہے نہ میں ان میں کوئی زیادتی کروں گا اور نہ کوئی کمی۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ”اگر اس نے سچ کہا ہے تو کامیاب ہوا۔“
Narrated `Abdullah:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever has to take an oath should swear by Allah or remain silent." (i.e. He should not swear by other than Allah)
ہم سے موسیٰ بن اسماعیل نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم سے جویریہ نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ نافع نے عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے بیان کیا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ”اگر کسی کو قسم کھانی ہی ہے تو اللہ تعالیٰ ہی کی قسم کھائے، ورنہ خاموش رہے۔“
Narrated Um Salama:Once Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "You people present your cases to me and some of you may be more eloquent and persuasive in presenting their argument. So, if I give some one's right to another (wrongly) because of the latter's (tricky) presentation of the case, I am really giving him a piece of fire; so he should not take it
ہم سے عبداللہ بن مسلمہ نے بیان کیا امام مالک سے، ان سے ہشام بن عروہ نے، ان سے ان کے باپ نے، ان سے زینب نے اور ان سے ام سلمہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ”تم لوگ میرے یہاں اپنے مقدمات لاتے ہو اور کبھی ایسا ہوتا ہے کہ ایک تم میں دوسرے سے دلیل بیان کرنے میں بڑھ کر ہوتا ہے ( قوت بیانیہ بڑھ کر رکھتا ہے ) پھر میں اس کو اگر اس کے بھائی کا حق ( غلطی سے ) دلا دوں، تو وہ حلال ( نہ سمجھے ) اس کو نہ لے، میں اس کو دوزخ کا ایک ٹکڑا دلا رہا ہوں۔“
Narrated `Abdullah bin `Abbas:Abu Sufyan told me that Heraclius said to him, "When I inquired you what he (i.e. Muhammad) ordered you, you replied that he ordered you to establish the prayer, to speak the truth, to be chaste, to keep promises and to pay back trusts." Then Heraclius added, "These are really the qualities of a prophet
ہم سے ابرہیم بن حمزہ نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا ہم سے ابراہیم بن سعد نے بیان کیا، ان سے صالح بن کیسان نے، ان سے ابن شہاب نے، ان سے عبیداللہ بن عبداللہ نے کہ عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے انہیں خبر دی، انہوں نے بیان کیا کہ انہیں ابوسفیان رضی اللہ عنہ نے خبر دی کہ ہرقل نے ان سے کہا تھا کہ میں نے تم سے پوچھا تھا کہ وہ ( محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) تمہیں کس بات کا حکم دیتے ہیں تو تم نے بتایا کہ وہ تمہیں نماز، سچائی، عفت، عہد کے پورا کرنے اور امانت کے ادا کرنے کا حکم دیتے ہیں۔ اور یہ نبی کی صفات ہیں۔
Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The signs of a hypocrite are three: (1) whenever he speaks, he tells a lie, (2) whenever he is entrusted, he proves to be dishonest, (3) whenever he promises, he breaks his promise
ہم سے قتیبہ بن سعید نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا ہم سے اسماعیل بن جعفر نے بیان کیا، ان سے ابوسہیل، نافع بن مالک بن ابی عامر نے بیان کیا، ان سے ان کے باپ نے بیان کیا اور ان سے ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ”منافق کی تین نشانیاں ہیں۔ جب بات کہی تو جھوٹ کہی، امانت دی گئی تو اس نے اس میں خیانت کی اور وعدہ کیا تو اسے پورا نہیں کیا۔“
Narrated Muhammad bin `Ali:Jabir bin `Abdullah said, "When the Prophet (ﷺ) died, Abu Bakr received some property from Al-`Ala bin Al-Hadrami. Abu Bakr said to the people, "Whoever has a money claim on the Prophet, or was promised something by him, should come to us (so that we may pay him his right)." Jabir added, "I said (to Abu Bakr), Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) promised me that he would give me this much, and this much, and this much (spreading his hands three times)." Jabir added, "Abu Bakr counted for me and handed me five-hundred (gold pieces), and then five-hundred, and then five-hundred
ہم سے ابراہیم بن موسیٰ نے بیان کیا، کہا ہمیں ہشام نے خبر دی، ان سے ابن جریج نے بیان کیا، انہیں عمرو بن دینار نے خبر دی، انہیں محمد بن علی نے اور ان سے جابر بن عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہما نے بیان کیا، کہا نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی وفات کے بعد ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس ( بحرین کے عامل ) علاء بن حضرمی رضی اللہ عنہ کی طرف سے مال آیا۔ ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے اعلان کرا دیا کہ جس کسی کا بھی نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم پر کوئی قرض ہو، یا آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا اس سے وعدہ ہو تو وہ ہمارے پاس آئے۔ جابر رضی اللہ عنہ نے بیان کیا کہ اس پر میں نے ان سے کہا کہ مجھ سے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے وعدہ فرمایا تھا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اتنا مال مجھے عطا فرمائیں گے۔ چنانچہ ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے تین مرتبہ اپنے ہاتھ بڑھائے اور میرے ہاتھ پر پانچ سو، پھر پانچ سو اور پھر پانچ سو گن دئیے۔
Narrated Sa`id bin Jubair:A Jew from Hira asked me which one of the two periods Musa (i.e. Prophet Moses) completed. I said, "I don't know, (but wait) till I see the most learned 'Arab and inquire him about it." So, I went to Ibn `Abbas and asked him. He replied, "Moses completed the longer and better period." Ibn `Abbas added, "No doubt, an apostle of Allah always does what he says
ہم سے محمد بن عبدالرحیم نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم کو سعید بن سلیمان نے خبر دی، ان سے مروان بن شجاع نے بیان کیا، ان سے سالم افطس نے اور ان سے سعید بن جبیر نے بیان کیا کہ حیرہ کے یہودی نے مجھ سے پوچھا، موسیٰ علیہ السلام نے ( اپنے مہر کے ادا کرنے میں ) کون سی مدت پوری کی تھی؟ ( یعنی آٹھ سال کی یا دس سال کی، جن کا قرآن میں ذکر ہے ) میں نے کہا کہ مجھے معلوم نہیں، ہاں! عرب کے بڑے عالم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہو کر پوچھ لوں ( تو پھر تمہیں بتا دوں گا ) چنانچہ میں نے ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے پوچھا تو انہوں نے بتایا کہ آپ نے بڑی مدت پوری کی ( دس سال کی ) جو دونوں مدتوں میں بہتر تھی۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم بھی جب کسی سے وعدہ کرتے تو پورا کرتے تھے۔
Narrated Ubaidullah bin `Abdullah bin `Utba:Ibn `Abbas said, "O Muslims? How do you ask the people of the Scriptures, though your Book (i.e. the Qur'an) which was revealed to His Prophet is the most recent information from Allah and you recite it, the Book that has not been distorted? Allah has revealed to you that the people of the scriptures have changed with their own hands what was revealed to them and they have said (as regards their changed Scriptures): This is from Allah, in order to get some worldly benefit thereby." Ibn `Abbas added: "Isn't the knowledge revealed to you sufficient to prevent you from asking them? By Allah I have never seen any one of them asking (Muslims) about what has been revealed to you
ہم سے یحییٰ بن بکیر نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے لیث نے بیان کیا، یونس سے، ان سے ابن شہاب نے، ان سے عبیداللہ بن عبداللہ بن عتبہ نے کہ ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہا، اے مسلمانو! اہل کتاب سے کیوں سوالات کرتے ہو۔ حالانکہ تمہاری کتاب جو تمہارے نبی صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم پر نازل ہوئی ہے، اللہ تعالیٰ کی طرف سے سب سے بعد میں نازل ہوئی ہے۔ تم اسے پڑھتے ہو اور اس میں کسی قسم کی آمیزش بھی نہیں ہوئی ہے۔ اللہ تعالیٰ تو تمہیں پہلے ہی بتا چکا ہے کہ اہل کتاب نے اس کتاب کو بدل دیا، جو اللہ تعالیٰ نے انہیں دی تھی اور خود ہی اس میں تغیر کر دیا اور پھر کہنے لگے یہ کتاب اللہ کی طرف سے ہے۔ ان کا مقصد اس سے صرف یہ تھا کہ اس طرح تھوڑی پونجی ( دنیا کی ) حاصل کر سکیں پس کیا جو علم ( قرآن ) تمہارے پاس آیا ہے وہ تم کو ان ( اہل کتاب سے پوچھنے کو نہیں روکتا۔ اللہ کی قسم! ہم نے ان کے کسی آدمی کو کبھی نہیں دیکھا کہ وہ ان آیات کے متعلق تم سے پوچھتا ہو جو تم پر ( تمہارے نبی کے ذریعہ ) نازل کی گئی ہیں۔
