Overview

Iman (Faith) is the foundation of Islamic belief, encompassing belief in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Day of Judgment, and divine decree. The Prophet ﷺ defined Iman through the famous Hadith of Jibreel as believing in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and predestination. Authentic hadiths reveal that Iman has over sixty branches, with the highest being the testimony of faith and the lowest being removing harm from the road.

Key Lessons

Faith is not static — it increases with obedience and decreases with sin. A believer must continually renew and strengthen their Iman through dhikr, knowledge, and righteous deeds. The concept of Iman also encompasses action of the heart, tongue, and limbs.

Practical Guidance

Strengthen your faith by learning the six pillars of Iman deeply, attending Islamic circles, reading Quran daily, and making dua for firm faith (thabaat). Recite "Allahumma thabbit qalbi ala dinik" regularly. Avoid sins that weaken faith and seek repentance immediately.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، قَالَ سُئِلَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ عَنِ الْمُحَصَّبِ، فَحَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ،، قَالَ نَزَلَ بِهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَعُمَرُ وَابْنُ عُمَرَ‏.‏ وَعَنْ نَافِعٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ كَانَ يُصَلِّي بِهَا ـ يَعْنِي الْمُحَصَّبَ ـ الظُّهْرَ وَالْعَصْرَ ـ أَحْسِبُهُ قَالَ وَالْمَغْرِبَ‏.‏ قَالَ خَالِدٌ لاَ أَشُكُّ فِي الْعِشَاءِ، وَيَهْجَعُ هَجْعَةً، وَيَذْكُرُ ذَلِكَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم‏.‏
Translation:

Narrated Khalid bin Al-Harith:'Ubaidullah was asked about Al Mahassab. 'Ubaidullah narrated: Nafi` said, 'Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), `Umar and Ibn `Umar camped there." Nafi` added, "Ibn `Umar used to offer the Zuhr and `Asr prayers at it (i.e. Al-Mahassab)." I think he mentioned the Maghrib prayer also. I said, "I don't doubt about `Isha' (i.e. he used to offer it there also), and he used to sleep there for a while. He used to say, 'The Prophet (ﷺ) used to do the same

ہم سے عبداللہ بن عبدالوہاب نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم سے خالد بن حارث نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ عبیداللہ سے محصب کے بارے میں پوچھا گیا تو انہوں نے نافع سے بیان کیا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اور عمر اور ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہم نے محصب میں قیام فرمایا تھا۔ نافع سے روایت ہے کہ عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما محصب میں ظہر اور عصر پڑھتے تھے۔ میرا خیال ہے کہ انہوں نے مغرب ( پڑھنے کا بھی ) ذکر کیا، خالد نے بیان کیا کہ عشاء میں مجھے کوئی شک نہیں۔ اس کے پڑھنے کا ذکر ضرور کیا پھر تھوڑی دیر کے لیے وہاں سو رہتے نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے بھی ایسا ہی مذکور ہے۔

وَقَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ أَنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا أَقْبَلَ بَاتَ بِذِي طُوًى، حَتَّى إِذَا أَصْبَحَ دَخَلَ، وَإِذَا نَفَرَ مَرَّ بِذِي طُوًى وَبَاتَ بِهَا حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ، وَكَانَ يَذْكُرُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ‏.‏
Translation:

Narrated Nafi':Whenver Ibn 'Umar (ra) approached (Makkah) he used to pass the night at Dhi-Tuwa till dawn, and then he would enter Makkah. On his return, he used to pass by Dhi-Tuwa and pass the night there till dawn, and he used to say that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to do the same

اور محمد بن عیسیٰ نے کہا کہ ہم سے حماد بن سلمہ نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم سے ایوب نے بیان کیا، ان سے نافع نے بیان کیا کہ عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما جب مدینہ سے مکہ آتے تو ذی طویٰ میں رات گزارتے اور جب صبح صادق ہوتی تو مکہ میں داخل ہوتے۔ اسی طرح مکہ سے واپسی میں بھی ذی طویٰ سے گزرتے اور وہیں رات گزارتے اور فرماتے کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم بھی اسی طرح کرتے تھے۔

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ الْهَيْثَمِ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ كَانَ ذُو الْمَجَازِ وَعُكَاظٌ مَتْجَرَ النَّاسِ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ الإِسْلاَمُ كَأَنَّهُمْ كَرِهُوا ذَلِكَ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ ‏{‏لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ تَبْتَغُوا فَضْلاً مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ‏}‏ فِي مَوَاسِمِ الْحَجِّ‏.‏
Translation:

Narrated Ibn ' `Abbas:Dhul-Majaz and `Ukaz were the markets of the people during the Pre-Islamic period of ignorance. When the people embraced Islam, they disliked to do bargaining there till the following Holy Verses were revealed:-- There is no harm for you If you seek of the bounty Of your Lord (during Hajj by trading, etc)

ہم سے عثمان بن ہیثم نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم کو ابن جریج نے خبر دی، ان سے عمرو بن دینار نے بیان کیا اور ان سے عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے بیان کیا کہ ذوالمجاز اور عکاظ عہد جاہلیت کے بازار تھے جب اسلام آیا تو گویا لوگوں نے ( جاہلیت کے ان بازاروں میں ) خرید و فروخت کو برا خیال کیا اس پر ( سورۃ البقرہ کی ) یہ آیت نازل ہوئی ”تمہارے لیے کوئی حرج نہیں اگر تم اپنے رب کے فضل کی تلاش کرو، یہ حج کے زمانہ کے لیے تھا۔

Translation:

Narrated `Aisha:Safiya got her menses on the night of Nafr (departure from Hajj), and she said, "I see that I will detain you." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Aqra Halqa! Did she perform the Tawaf on the Day of Nahr (slaughtering)?" Somebody replied in the affirmative. He said, "Then depart." (Different narrators mentioned that) `Aisha said, "We set out with Allah's Apostle (from Medina) with the intention of performing Hajj only. When we reached Mecca, he ordered us to finish the Ihram. When it was the night of Nafr (departure), Safiya bint Huyay got her menses. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Halqa Aqra! I think that she will detain you," and added, "Did you perform the Tawaf (Al-Ifada) on the Day of Nahr (slaughtering)?" She replied, "Yes." He said, "Then depart." I said, "O Allah's Apostle! I have not (done the Umra)." He replied, "Perform `Umra from Tan`im." My brother went with me and we came across the Prophet (ﷺ) in the last part of the night. Translation:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ سُمَىٍّ، مَوْلَى أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ السَّمَّانِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ الْعُمْرَةُ إِلَى الْعُمْرَةِ كَفَّارَةٌ لِمَا بَيْنَهُمَا، وَالْحَجُّ الْمَبْرُورُ لَيْسَ لَهُ جَزَاءٌ إِلاَّ الْجَنَّةُ ‏"‏‏.‏
Translation:

Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "(The performance of) `Umra is an expiation for the sins committed (between it and the previous one). And the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing except Paradise

ہم سے عبداللہ بن یوسف نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم کو امام مالک نے خبر دی، انہیں ابوبکر بن عبدالرحمٰن کے غلام سمی نے خبر دی، انہیں ابوصالح سمان نے خبر دی اور انہیں ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ایک عمرہ کے بعد دوسرا عمرہ دونوں کے درمیان کے گناہوں کا کفارہ ہے اور حج مبرور کی جزا جنت کے سوا اور کچھ نہیں ہے۔

Translation:

Narrated Ibn Juraij:`Ikrima bin Khalid asked Ibn `Umar about performing `Umra before Hajj. Ibn `Umar replied, "There is no harm in it." `Ikrima said, "Ibn `Umar also said, 'The Prophet (ﷺ) had performed `Umra before performing Hajj.'" Narrated `Ikrima bin Khalid: "I asked Ibn `Umar the same (as above)

ہم سے احمد بن محمد نے بیان کیا، انہیں عبداللہ بن مبارک نے خبر دی، انہیں ابن جریج نے خبر دی کہ عکرمہ بن خالد نے ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے حج سے پہلے عمرہ کرنے کے بارے میں پوچھا تو انہوں نے کہا کوئی حرج نہیں، عکرمہ نے کہا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما نے بتلایا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے حج کرنے سے پہلے عمرہ ہی کیا تھا اور ابراہیم بن سعد نے محمد بن اسحاق سے بیان کیا، ان سے عکرمہ بن خالد نے بیان کیا کہ میں نے عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے پوچھا پھر یہی حدیث بیان کی۔ ہم سے عمرو بن علی فلاس نے بیان کیا، ان سے ابوعاصم نے بیان کیا، انہیں ابن جریج نے خبر دی، ان سے عکرمہ بن خالد نے بیان کیا کہ میں نے ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے پوچھا پھر یہی حدیث بیان کی۔

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، قَالَ دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَعُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ الْمَسْجِدَ،، فَإِذَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ جَالِسٌ إِلَى حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ، وَإِذَا نَاسٌ يُصَلُّونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ صَلاَةَ الضُّحَى‏.‏ قَالَ فَسَأَلْنَاهُ عَنْ صَلاَتِهِمْ‏.‏ فَقَالَ بِدْعَةٌ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ كَمِ اعْتَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ أَرْبَعً إِحْدَاهُنَّ فِي رَجَبٍ، فَكَرِهْنَا أَنْ نَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ‏.‏ قَالَ وَسَمِعْنَا اسْتِنَانَ، عَائِشَةَ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الْحُجْرَةِ، فَقَالَ عُرْوَةُ يَا أُمَّاهُ، يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ‏.‏ أَلاَ تَسْمَعِينَ مَا يَقُولُ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ‏.‏ قَالَتْ مَا يَقُولُ قَالَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم اعْتَمَرَ أَرْبَعَ عُمَرَاتٍ إِحْدَاهُنَّ فِي رَجَبٍ‏.‏ قَالَتْ يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، مَا اعْتَمَرَ عُمْرَةً إِلاَّ وَهُوَ شَاهِدُهُ، وَمَا اعْتَمَرَ فِي رَجَبٍ قَطُّ‏.‏
Translation:

Narrated Mujahid:Urwa bin Az-Zubair and I entered the Mosque (of the Prophet) and saw `Abdullah bin `Umar sitting near the dwelling place of Aisha and some people were offering the Duha prayer. We asked him about their prayer and he replied that it was a heresy. He (Urwa) then asked him how many times the Prophet (ﷺ) had performed `Umra. He replied, 'Four times; one of them was in the month of Rajab." We disliked to contradict him. Then we heard `Aisha, the Mother of faithful believers cleaning her teeth with Siwak in the dwelling place. 'Urwa said, "O Mother! O Mother of the believers! Don't you hear what Abu `Abdur Rahman is saying?" She said, "What does he say?" 'Urwa said, "He says that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) performed four `Umra and one of them was in the month of Rajab." `Aisha said, "May Allah be merciful to Abu `Abdur Rahman! The Prophet (ﷺ) did not perform any `Umra except that he was with him, and he never performed any `Umra in Rajab

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، قَالَ دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَعُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ الْمَسْجِدَ،، فَإِذَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ جَالِسٌ إِلَى حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ، وَإِذَا نَاسٌ يُصَلُّونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ صَلاَةَ الضُّحَى‏.‏ قَالَ فَسَأَلْنَاهُ عَنْ صَلاَتِهِمْ‏.‏ فَقَالَ بِدْعَةٌ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ كَمِ اعْتَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ أَرْبَعً إِحْدَاهُنَّ فِي رَجَبٍ، فَكَرِهْنَا أَنْ نَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ‏.‏ قَالَ وَسَمِعْنَا اسْتِنَانَ، عَائِشَةَ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الْحُجْرَةِ، فَقَالَ عُرْوَةُ يَا أُمَّاهُ، يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ‏.‏ أَلاَ تَسْمَعِينَ مَا يَقُولُ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ‏.‏ قَالَتْ مَا يَقُولُ قَالَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم اعْتَمَرَ أَرْبَعَ عُمَرَاتٍ إِحْدَاهُنَّ فِي رَجَبٍ‏.‏ قَالَتْ يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، مَا اعْتَمَرَ عُمْرَةً إِلاَّ وَهُوَ شَاهِدُهُ، وَمَا اعْتَمَرَ فِي رَجَبٍ قَطُّ‏.‏
Translation:

Narrated Mujahid:Urwa bin Az-Zubair and I entered the Mosque (of the Prophet) and saw `Abdullah bin `Umar sitting near the dwelling place of Aisha and some people were offering the Duha prayer. We asked him about their prayer and he replied that it was a heresy. He (Urwa) then asked him how many times the Prophet (ﷺ) had performed `Umra. He replied, 'Four times; one of them was in the month of Rajab." We disliked to contradict him. Then we heard `Aisha, the Mother of faithful believers cleaning her teeth with Siwak in the dwelling place. 'Urwa said, "O Mother! O Mother of the believers! Don't you hear what Abu `Abdur Rahman is saying?" She said, "What does he say?" 'Urwa said, "He says that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) performed four `Umra and one of them was in the month of Rajab." `Aisha said, "May Allah be merciful to Abu `Abdur Rahman! The Prophet (ﷺ) did not perform any `Umra except that he was with him, and he never performed any `Umra in Rajab

Narrated 'Urwa bin Az-Zubair:I asked `Aisha (whether the Prophet (ﷺ) had performed `Umra in Rajab). She replied, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) never performed any `Umra in Rajab
